He has had a long and successful career in the NHS and since 2011 has been working in the private sector. His clinical interests are benign gynaecology, urogynaecology, abnormal uterine bleeding and the menopause. He has extensive experience in Obstetrics, high and low risk. He has a long history of teaching and research and has served on the Boards of National and International specialist medical societies. For over thirty he has lectured extensively at National and International scientific meetings. He is a past Scientific Editor of the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and has been a Visiting Professor at Middlesex University. Mr Downes has been undertaking medico-legal work for over twenty years. He holds the Bond Solon CUBS qualification and has annual update training at Bond Solon’s annual expert conference. The majority of his work is Part 35 medical negligence reports, Breach & Causation and Condition & Prognosis. He also undertakes personal injury reports, criminal instructions and regulatory cases. The majority of his instructions are UK and Ireland based but he has received instructions from Hong Kong, Trinidad & Tobago and The Channel Islands. He currently produces about sixty reports a year. Mr Downes works closely with instructing solicitors to give a prompt professional service with an aim to securing the best outcome for the instructing party. He is happy to give an informal pro bono opinion. Typical medical negligence instructions include: retained products of conception, surgical complications at laproscopic, abdominal, vaginal or hysteroscopic surgery, third degree tear complications, delayed delivery / cerebral palsy, complications of HRT and pelvic pain. A graduate of the University of Leicester Medical School (1989), Mr Downes became a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1994 and was awarded Fellowship in 2008. He is also the co-editor of the textbook “Advances in Gynaecological Surgery” and has authored numerous research publications.
