I have been a Psychiatric Expert Witness for 15 years, providing evidence in clinical negligence, personal injury, professional regulatory, capacity and employment cases in civil proceedings. I have a special interest in birth trauma and perinatal psychiatric injury. I receive a high level of instructions each year from Claimant and defendant lawyers in the UK and beyond.
I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at the University of Sheffield and Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist at Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust. My current NHS post involves the community management of adults with severe and complex psychiatric disorders. I previously held the position of Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist for the Sheffield Perinatal Mental Health Service for 13 years, overseeing its transformation from a fledgling team into a regional multidisciplinary service.
I am a Fellow and Examiner for the Royal College of Psychiatrists and served on the Executive Committee of the College's Perinatal Faculty between 2010 and 2014.
Since being named Medicolegal Expert of the Year 2023 in the Lawyer Monthly Expert Witness Awards, my company, Peak Medicolegal Services Ltd has gone from strength to strength, expanding its reach. I have received repeat instructions on Clinical negligence and Personal injury cases not only from the UK but from as far as Ireland, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man.
A particular highlight for me over the last 12 months was being a panellist discussing psychiatric aspects of perineal tears at the first ever South Asian Maternal Health Conference held at the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, London in June 2024. As a Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist of South Asian background, I was immensely proud to be part of this groundbreaking event which shone a light on the health inequalities that exist for South Asian women in Maternity services in the UK. It also showcased the excellent work of many experts from the fields of Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Law, Science as well as those with lived experience.
In addition to this, I was honoured to be included in the Corporate INTL 'Who's Who Adviser Handbook 2024' as a leading Medical Negligence Expert Witness in the UK and to be described as a 'Male Trailblazer in Law' by the Business Fame Magazine in August that year.
I currently prepare an average of 15 Medicolegal reports a month with a 70:30 Claimant: Defendant split. I offer face to face and remote consultations. Interesting cases I have provided evidence on in the last year have included several high value birth injury claims involving stillbirth and a very high-profile fitness to practice case. I was also instructed as a Psychiatric Expert in the UK Post Office Scandal.
