Consultant Medical Microbiologist - Microbiology Expert of the Year
Dr. Thomas trained in Medicine in Scotland, before moving to the North West of England (Manchester), to complete specialist training in Medical Microbiology and Virology. During this time she gained a Masters qualification in Diagnostic and Medical Virology and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Dr. Thomas worked briefly in Malawi, funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), on the DelPHE Scheme to improve higher education in the developing world.
Dr. Thomas has been a Consultant Medical Microbiologist at the Manchester University Foundation Trust since 2010 and has recently been appointed Head of Unified Service. She is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Manchester. She was the Department Lead for Decontamination for six years, during which time she established the Trust Water and Ventilation Safety Groups. In 2017 Dr. Thomas undertook an Observership program at the WHO / UN City Copenhagen, with the European Society for Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) and for the past year has been on Sabbatical in the Laboratory & Testing Cell of Public Health Scotland (PHS), working on the COVID-19 response.
Dr. Thomas has published widely in peer reviewed journals and been Invited Speaker at Scientific Conferences nationally and internationally. Stephanie also contributed to textbook Chapters on Infection and Infection Prevention. Her research interests lie in the management of sepsis. She has a particular interest in infection risks associated with climate change.
Her areas of clinical expertise include:
• Management of patients with sepsis
• Management of infection in patients requiring Intensive Care treatment (including
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)
• Management of post-surgical infections
• Management of complex vascular infection including the Diabetic Foot
• Decontamination and infections associated with the built environment
Medico-Legal Experience:
Dr. Thomas has been providing expert reports since 2015, including instructions from Solicitors representing NHS Resolution. She has undergone Bond Solon Expert Witness training and was awarded the Cardiff University Bond Solon Expert Witness Certificate (CUBS). She finds expert witness work professionally rewarding, as lessons learnt can be fed directly back into improved patient safety and care.
